Catholic Schools Week

We enjoyed celebrating Catholic Schools Week. We invited our Grandparents to the school. We interviewed them to find out about life when they were young. We also held a prayer service. Here are some photos from Grandparents' Day:

Science Week at Clooncagh

This week at Clooncagh we had great fun celebrating Science Week! We learned a lot about convection currents in particular. Convection currents have a lot to do with the way heat rises and cold sinks. In the oceans the hot water rises to the top and the cold water sinks. The salt water also affects this, the water in the oceans is salty but when the water from the ice caps melt the salt water sinks to the bottom and the fresh water comes to the top. These currents are called thermohaline currents. In a science experiment in Mr. Dukes classroom he filled a large container with water and put it on top of the cooker. He put a dyed ice cube in the water and it melted like normal and sank to the bottom. Then he turned on the heat and the water heated up so that all the dyed water rose.

We also watched a video to make sure we understood what was happening, the video was really good as it made us understand what was happening but was still really fun to watch, The name of the person in the video was Bill Nye the Science Guy. Our teacher took photos of the experiment too.

Maths Week 

To celebrate Maths Week we held a maths trail. Both the Senior and Junior Room took part. We had to answer questions using the environment. To answer some questions we needed to go outside.

We returned inside and the senior room paired up with first and second class to find maths facts based on Storm Ophelia. Below is a list of the information we were looking for:

We discovered a lot of facts and discussed the units of measure used to record different information. We had facts based on time, distance, speed, money and length. Who knew there was so much maths involved in a storm?

A Trip up Sliabh Bán

          

On Friday the 29^th of September we enjoyed our first school trip of the school year on Sliabh Bán Mountain. At ten to ten the cyclists took off on their bikes, the bus left shortly after. Most of the senior room cycled and the majority of the little room went on the bus. It was hard work cycling up that hill but it was worth it when we got there. We were there to visit the old ruins of the church and the mass rock. We set off walking leaving our bikes at the first car park. Once we got to the church ruins we drew a picture of what we thought it looked like before. We read some information on a notice board and noticed some beautiful wildlife around us.

After we saw the church ruins we moved on to the mass rock. We feasted on some of our tasty lunches while there. We were tired out by then but still had to make our way back. We took our pictures by the new wind farm and had great fun messing and running on the mountain. We spotted a little brown rabbit and a small frog. It was a beautiful place to explore and have fun.

On the way home we had to walk back to the car park and get our bikes. Then down the hill we went. It wasn’t a long cycle back but the hills slowed us down. We arrived back at school at about one o’clock. After a really exciting day we settled down to a spelling test, not the best end to our great day!

We learned all about early Christian Ireland and the penal laws. We were expecting to see a proper church up on the mountain… turns out it was only a couple of blocks but it was still a mysterious and interesting sight. It was a very good day.

             It was a great day!

Thrilling discovery by Dillan

Thrilling Discovery  

My school was going to Dublin zoo to see all the animals. On the way our bus had to stop. A famer told our bus driver quietly. When we got to the zoo we saw a pink giraffe, black pig, grey elephant, brown squirrel and a white falcon but our teacher didn’t look. On the way back we say a man drilling a hole in the ground to get water for the animals. When we got back to the bus we ate our sweets and we talked about what we did at the zoo until we got home

One day John suggested that we get a class pet to Ms.Kelly. Ms.Kelly said it was a great idea and John should pick.
John chose a three eyed crow with sixty two feet and a long beak. The crow began drilling a hole in Ms. Kellys shoe quietly while she was teaching about a mysterious pink giraffe. 

Ms.Kelly began to scream loudly. The crow flew up to her shoulder and began to take bites from her head chomp chomp chomp chomp is all you heard as the crow removed Ms. Kellys left ear. Then the hairy left nostril gross right!?!?
