National Tree Week 2012

National Tree Day took place on the 11th of October. We spent the week learning about some of the trees that are native to Ireland.

On Tuesday, we were doing art with Kate, our artist in residence. We made our own sketch book and then went walking on the main road. We turned up towards the mountain, and soon found a 'sketching point'. Using our viewfinders we all found something to draw. Here are some of the pictures we found!

We had great fun discussing and drawing our pictures. It's not as easy as it looks though!

On Thursday we had to sort our leaves. We made two groups: deciduous and coniferous leaves (that's evergreen to you and me!)

Did you know that holly is an evergreen tree?
At two o'clock on Friday we went on a 'tree hunt'. We walked down the road and saw loads of trees. We saw ash, sycamore, hawthorn, willow, elderberry and lots more trees.

We each picked one species of tree to answer questions on.

Some people were in no rush to get back to school!
I don't know about you but I'm already looking forward to next year.
Happy National Tree Day!

Our Pancakes!!

On the 21st of February or Pancake Tuesday we made pancakes in school. We brought in ingredients and Mr.Duke brought in a portable gas hob and plate heater(to keep the pancakes warm while we used  up the batter). We got a bowl and put in 100 grams of self-raising flour,1 or 2 eggs and 280-300 ml of milk into the bowl and mixed it together with a whisk.

Next we could either put the batter in the pancake maker or go to Mr.Duke and he would cook it on the the gas hob.We thought of getting a pan and putting it on the fire but it didn't work. 2 of our students are vegetarians and could not have eggs so they brought in their own batter to cook.By now everyone was getting hungry so we used the last of the batter and handed out the pancakes.Everyone had brought in toppings for the pancakes such as chocolate spread, golden syrup and lemon juice and sugar. By the time we were finished the place was a mess but everyone was happy because the pancakes were delicious!!!!!
